Customer Service & Promotion Units

To provide necessary guidance and services to taxpayers and general public Inland Revenue Department operates, Customer Service & Promotion units located in the Ground Floor, 1st floor and the 2nd floor of the Inland Revenue head office at Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 02.

Taxpayers and the general public can walk in to these units for the services required. There are two sections that divided into six units, available to offer different types of services as One Stop Shop.

Taxpayers and the general public can also contact the Call Centre of IRD for more information and clarifications regarding tax matters.

Primary Registration Unit

Primary Registration Unit is for new registration activities of customers as taxpayers.

The main activities of the Primary Registration Unit
  • Issuing Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
  • Issuing Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • Issuing SSID (Specified Staff Identity) Number
  • Issuing duplicate TIN certificate
  • Tax Agent Registration

Tax Registration Unit

Tax Registration Unit, register taxpayers for any type of Tax Type.

The main activities of the Tax Registration Unit
  • Registration for taxes: –
    • Income Tax
      • Corporate Entities (CIT)
      • Partnership (PIT)
      • Individuals (IIT)
      • Clubs etc.
    • Value Added Tax (VAT)
      • Permanent VAT
      • Temporary VAT
    • Simplified Value Added Tax Scheme (SVAT)
    • Nation Building Tax (NBT)
    • Pay As You Earn (PAYE)
    • Withholding Tax (WHT)
    • Economic Service Charge (ESC)
    •  Special Project Registration, Extension & Termination under sec.  22.7 etc.
  • Issuing Duplicate Certificate for Permanent VAT Registration
  • Issuing no objection letter for Custom purpose

Customer Information Update Unit

Customer Information Update Unit update or change the profiles of the taxpayers.

The main activities of the Customer Information Update Unit
  • Updating name and address of company, organization, partner, director, individual etc.
  • Customer status update by cancellations of the registration, inactivation, and reactivation of TIN registration or tax type registration.
  • Update or changes under Simplified Value Added Tax Scheme

Business Consultation Unit

Business Consultation Unit assist the walk-in customers regarding their tax matters providing consultation Service.

The main activities of the Business Consultation Unit
  • Assisting walk-in customers for consultations.
  • Computing tax liability and issuing clearance for
    • Remit Payment Outside Sri Lanka
    • Migration Allowance
    • Terminal Benefits

Customer Supporting and Promotion Unit

Customer supporting and Promotion Unit issue all the clearances to be issued by Inland Revenue Department to customers and sell the Department Publications to customers.

The main activities of the Customer Supporting and Promotion Unit
  • Issuing Income Tax Clearance Certificate for non-taxpayers (Migrants).
  • Issuing clearances, credit vouchers, duplicate tax returns and paying-in-slip for all tax types etc.
  • Issuing permit for Duty Concessionary motor vehicle.
  • Taxpayer awareness and Public relations.
  • Sales of Department Publications.

Central Document Management Unit

Central Document Management Unit collect all the document send by the tax payers to Inland Revenue Department

The main activities of the Central Document Management Unit
  • Collecting Tax Returns & issuing Acknowledgments for all tax types.
  • Collecting Tax Assessments related Appeals, Objections and Queries.
  • Collecting Tax related all other documents.
